History

Stadium NSC "Olimpiyskiy" in Kiev is the main football arena in Ukraine, the history of which begins in the 30's of the last century. The construction was built according to the project by architect M. Greck in 1937-1941. But the stadium's opening, scheduled for June 22 1941, was postponed for 5 years due to the Great Patriotic War.

Sport Complex changed its name three times - in 40 and 50 years of the twentieth century, it had the name of Nikita Khrushchev, then - it was renamed to “Republican Stadium”. Since the time of independence of Ukraine "Olimpiyskiy" was granted the status of the National Sports Complex.

The current renovation of the stadium is already the third one. In 1966-1967 the building was expanded, there was completed the second tier of the tribunes, in 1978-1980 – there was carried out the major reconstruction for the XXII Olympic Games with the owner Moscow. From May 20 to July 27, 1980 in Kiev there were held football matches involving the Olympic teams of Algeria, Iraq, Spain, Costa Rica, East Germany, Syria and Finland.

Architectural features

Reconstruction of the Stadium NSC “Olimpiyskiy” provides the creation of the modern arena - a new symbol of Euro 2012 - on the basis of the old building. The renovation project saves the existing authentic embankment of the lower tier and second reinforced concrete tier of the tribunes. The new stadium will connect the 80-year sports history of Ukraine with the European experience and advanced technologies.

According to the project of reconstruction, “Olimpiyskiy” will be universal stadium - a multifunctional sports arena for football matches and athletics competitions at the international level.

NSC "Olimpiyskiy" is the largest among all sports arenas, which are in preparation for Euro 2012 - it will hold 69 004 seats.

The modern face of the stadium will present a glass facade and a cover in the form of suspended hovel with the semitransparent synthetic membrane, covering 100% of seats.

The infrastructure of the stadium will meet the requirements of UEFA to the stadiums of Class Elite - with a new security system, increasing the number of approaches and escape routes of the stadium, CCTV system with monitors and video cameras, information and computer technologies.

NSC "Olimpiyskiy" is considered to be the main stadium of the future European Championship. It will host the final and closing ceremony of the Euro 2012.
